While the next-generation CLS has been caught a number of times, this is the first time that we’ve seen the high-performance AMG model strutting its stuff in public without heavy cladding. Its side mirror indicators have the same design style as the new E-Class sedan, and, regardless of the heavy camouflage, the four oval tailpipes are an obvious indication of its AMG status.
The current CLS 63 AMG shares its engine with the previous-generation E 63 AMG, and both deliver over 500-horsepower. If the same goes with the next generation, expect to see the new CLS 63 AMG powered by a 525-horsepower 6.3-liter V8, with Mercedes’ Speedshift MCT 7-speed gearbox driving the rear wheels.
As with any Mercedes-Benz wearing the AMG designation, this AMG will sport improved suspension, braking and aerodynamic touches to boost performance in all areas from the more tame standard CLS models. Like the E 63 AMG, standard wheels should be 18-inches, with the 19-inch size listed on the options menu.
Sales of the CLS 63 AMG should begin in 2011. Segment rivals will include the new Porsche Panamera Turbo and the high-performance version of Aston Martin’s new Rapide. Audi will also enter this “four-door coupe” segment with the A7 and performance S7 variant.
